Spring Flush

A photo collage shows the native wildflowers, lambs, and pigs enjoying the spring flush of grass.

Nature is hard at work around the farm! It’s a wonderful time to stop and take in the beauty that is the awakening of spring on the prairie.
With life moving into high gear, so are the chores and preparations for the season. A new kitchen garden is finished waiting for its first seeds. The old trampoline turned shade structure has a new white tarp to keep our flock cool in this record heat. We ran a camp fire in the grove for an entire day to create wood ash for the chicken dust bath. We’re preparing space for Mulan to welcome her litter of piglets at the beginning of June. And each day begins and ends with a move for the sheep to a new paddock, as we do our best to stay in front of forage growth.
The sun starts early and goes down late. At the end of the day, we both have a wonderful sense of satisfaction looking at what we’ve accomplished in cooperation with the farm. Sharing the journey with you every month through the fruits of that labor makes it even better!
